ASPIRING local bands, soloists and duos from in and around Hobsons Bay battled it on stage last Saturday at the 2013 Hobsons Bay FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands competition.
The 2013 winners were announced and new band ’1283’ was crowned victorious.
Three Footscray City High students formed the band just last year and already showed their talent.
Bass players Daniel Oke, 17, said he and his band members meshed well together as a band.
“I think we all have a very similar taste in music,” Daniel said.
“We met one day for just a jam and to play music and we connected really well,” he said.
The boys have since been playing shows around the western suburbs and at bars and pubs around the city.
“It’s really fun to play shows and to get people involved in the music we make,” Daniel said.
Daniel described the band, who practice together once a week, as alternative rock.
“All three of us bring different music taste into the sounds that we have,” he said.
As the winners, 1283 will compete in the Push Start Regional Final and if successful will go on to compete at the annual Push Over Festival in March 2014.
Daniel said the band had high hopes for the future but at the moment were juggling school work as well.
“My hopes are to go into uni and keep playing in bands and hopefully we’ll still be together to keep playing music then,” he said. “I see myself playing music for a long time.”
