EVERYONE in the West has been urged to race along to a fundraising day for the Children’s Ward at Sunshine Hospital.
The 2013 Western Health Community Raceday at Flemington Racecourse will be on Saturday 14 December.
Free children’s activities at the event will cater for all ages with outdoor games, arts and crafts and pony rides.
Attendees will also enjoy eight races, alongside guided tours of the Flemington Heritage Centre and the racecourse.
Western Health Foundation Trusts, Foundations and corporate relations manager, Simonne Michelle-Wells, said the fast-growing population in the West has led to high demand for children’s health services.
“This year the funds raised from the raceday will benefit the Children’s Ward Appeal,” she said.
“The Children’s Ward at Sunshine Hospital is more than 30 years old and will receive a significant upgrade in 2014 through the $1.1 million appeal.
“The upgraded Children’s Ward will have a dedicated family room complex, a High Care Unit, isolation (negative pressure) room, baby bathing facility and a Day Procedure Recovery Unit.”
Last week, two former Melbourne Cup-winning jockeys Jim Johnson and Midge Didham visited young patients at Sunshine Hospital.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour ambassadors won the race during the 1960s and 70s.
The veteran jockeys were accompanied by the Melbourne Cup during their visit.
On Saturday, the gates at Flemington will open at 11.50am, with the first race at 12.50pm.
