Fuel crisis unfurls in Sunshine

AROUND 30 fire-fighters, along with MFB Hazmat crews and the Environment Protection Authority, attended an aviation fuel spill, near the Sunshine train station on Sunday 2 March.
Between 1000 to 4000 litres of aviation fuel escaped from a damaged pipeline running alongside the railway lines in Anderson Rd just before 1.30pm.
The incident took 50 minutes to bring under control as an industrial vacuum truck was used to pump the aviation fuel into a tank to be safely removed from the site. Workmen on site were able to contain the fuel into a bunded concrete pit and MFB fire-fighters covered the spill in foam.
MFB Hazmat operators used specialist equipment to monitor flammability and toxicity levels, and conducted air monitoring on the weekend.
Exxon Mobil representatives also arrived on the scene to provide expert advice alongside an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) official.
The fuel leak occurred within pipes which service the Melbourne Airport in Tullamarine.
The accident caused disruptions along the Sunbury train line between Sunshine and Watergardens.
Passengers on a V/Line train travelling from Melbourne to Bendigo were delayed for more than an hour.
