Booze bans on

HOBSONS Bay will stick with trial alcohol free zones for the next two summer periods after a successful initial trial last summer.
The bans are expected to be tested this summer with last year’s uncommonly cool weather keeping activity in Hobsons Bay relatively slow.
The bans to Altona were initially introduced last December but were introduced to Williamstown and Laverton the year before.
Councillor Angela Altair said she was confident the bans had reduced anti-social behaviour.
Hobsons Bay Mayor Cr Michael Raffoul said the council would review trial at the end of the 2012-2013 summer period.
In Altona the alcohol free zones apply along Pier St from Railway St South to Civic Parade, between Romawi and Bayview St.
In Williamstown; along the Esplanade from Bayview St to Thompson St, including all public areas south of the footpath to the waters of Port Philip Bay and bounded to the north by Railway Place including the Williamstown Beach Railway Station and in Laverton including Woods St, Thomas St, Maher Rd and Hickey St.
“The council trialled alcohol free zones in Williamstown and Laverton last year and in Altona this year – the latter at the request of Victoria Police,” Cr Raffoul said.
“While the council can designate areas where alcohol cannot be consumed, Victoria Police are authorised to enforce the ban.
“This resulted in 17 fines issued for alcohol offences from 1 December 2010 to 30 April 2011 – 13 in Altona, four in Williamstown.
“However, more evidence needs to be gathered to support the extended alcohol free zones becoming permanent and to allow the council to make an informed decision.”
