WILLIAMSTOWN made the Victorian Sub District Cricket grand final last year on the back of a superb season from batting all-rounder Craig Sheedy.
To go one better this year, the club will need greater support from its young players.
It’s too early to say who is likely to step up, but Murry Ring held his own on the opening day of the season, taking 2/76 from 23 overs.
No surprises for guessing that Sheedy also performed well with the ball, taking 2/29 from 19 overs, as Williamstown dismissed Brunswick for 223.
Coach Brenton Hodges said the club’s mix of seasoned veterans and up-and-coming youngsters, with very few players in that mid-twenties bracket, has given the club plenty of scope to blood its young players for top-line cricket.
Lachlan Broadway, who played under 17 and First XI cricket last season, opened the batting when Williamstown took to the crease with just six overs to go until the end of play. He will aim to get on the scoreboard this Saturday with partner Craig Sheedy, who is sitting on three not out after Grand Sandars was bowled LBW for two.
Williamstown will play at least the first half of the season away, while the redevelopment of Burbank Oval is completed, and may be back on home turf after Christmas.
