MOST of the time women are caregivers, however during the month of October they are constantly reminded to care for themselves.
October is breast cancer awareness month and a group of ladies from Curves in Taylors Lakes will host a Girls Night In this Friday to raise much needed funds for research.
Owner of Curves and organiser of the event Marilyn said the whole community had become involved and other local businesses had come on board to contribute to the evening.
The Sydenham resident said she hoped to raise $1000 on the night and more money throughout the month with all joining fees being donated to breast cancer research.
She said the night was all about women supporting women and coming together in the name of a good cause.
“Everyone has been touched by breast cancer at some stage,” the local business identity said.
“It’s a very big issue for women.
“I feel so empowered by it all. Empowered we can do something to help.”
She said while Curves would not profit from the event, the non-monetary rewards would be great.
And she encouraged women to look after themselves.
“Typically, women are caregivers, but when it comes to breast cancer, women need to understand how important it is to take care of themselves. Scheduling an annual doctor’s visit, performing a monthly breast self-exam, eating a nutritious diet and making time for regular exercise are all things that a woman can do to stay strong and help reduce her chances of developing this devastating disease.”
It is recommended that women aged 50 to 69 are encouraged to have a mammogram every two years. Women aged 70 or older should discuss mammograms and ongoing monitoring with their doctors.
Women interested in attending the event this Friday night should call Marilyn on 8361 6277 or come on the evening from 7pm to 9pm. Drinks and food will be provided.
