A HOPPERS Crossing resident who endured a horror train journey is calling on the State Government to make Victoria’s train system safer.
Donna Dunn, 61, boarded a train at Hoppers Crossing Railway Station on 27 February on her way to work in the city.
The previous two trains had been cancelled, so when the train arrived it was overcrowded by three loads of peak-hour passengers.
Ms Dunn, a nurse, was forced to stand for the entire journey, which also included power failure to her train, meaning it was stranded without air-conditioning between the Laverton and Newport stations.
To make matters worse, Ms Dunn had received a total hip replacement just six months before the incident, making it difficult for her to stand for extended periods.
“I’m a nurse so I think like a nurse and I just thought what would happen if there was an emergency on that train,” Ms Dunn said.
“Even something as simple as a regular faint from the heat would be impossible to deal with.”
Ms Dunn said it was time for Wyndham and the rest of Melbourne to have a reliable and safe train system.
“The overcrowding happens on a daily basis. This was the last straw for me,” she said.
“I don’t believe that anything is going to change when they finish the new train line.
“One day something serious is going to happen on these old trains.”
Star contacted the office of Minister for Public Transport, Terry Mulder, for comment but no response was provided.
