ALEXANDRA Cook is happy to say good bye to her long locks as long as it is for the right cause.
The 22-year-old Williamstown resident’s hair will face the chop this weekend as part of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Alexandra said she is ready to throw the mantra that hair is a girl’s best friend out the window after making the decision to join the cause a few years ago.
“I think everyone knows someone affected by cancer and if you can cure one you can cure them all,” Miss Cook said.
Miss Cook, who is in her third year studying nursing, said she is passionate about helping vulnerable people, and hopes to work with children, which is why the Greatest Shave appealed to her.
“As soon as I signed up I knew I was doing the right thing and the more it’s talked about the more I can’t wait.”
So far Miss Cook has raised $2000 and hopes to increase her donation when she holds a community event this Sunday where a professional hairdresser will be on hand to do the shave.
The event, held on Sunday 17 March will bring the community together to raise funds for the cause.
Miss Cook, who works at Scope, a non-profit-organisation that caters for people with a disability will attend the event and Sun Theatre in Yarraville, another one of her employers and sponsor will be there on the day selling popcorn.
“Working with people with a disability gave me a lot of confidence to do this.”
“(On the day) 30 people in wheel chairs will be selling their art work.”
Miss Cook’s campaign also involved a YouTube clip that appealed for celebrity talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to make an appearance on the day.
“I’m aiming for Ellen happy with Hamish and Andy, aiming for a mini celebrity to come down.”
Anyone who would like to participate or bring a stall on the day can contact Alexandra on 0421028010.
