MELTON City Council established a Suburb Naming Advisory Committee at last week’s council meeting.
The committee was formed after the council last year resolved to establish 11 new suburbs in the municipality and to adopt a community engagement strategy to develop naming proposals.
At last week’s council meeting general manager for corporate services Peter Bean said the new committee would primarily be charged with offering specialist advice and recommendations to inform the development of suburb name shortlists for consideration by the council.
It will also accept submissions received for potential suburb names during the public consultation process.
Mayor Kathy Majdlik was named chairperson of the committee with Cr Sophie Ramsey appointed chairperson. Councillors Lara Carli and Nola Dunn were also selected to sit on the group.
Mr Bean said Melton is currently the second fastest growing municipality in Australia with an annual growth rate of about 5.6 per cent.
“Exceptional and ongoing urban growth in the City of Melton has created a requirement for the formation and naming of new suburbs,” Mr Bean said.
He said the group would report to the Office of Geographic Names who is ultimately responsible for accepting any changes to existing suburban boundaries and names.
