Student parliamentarians

ST MARY’S Primary School children got a taste of parliamentary life while on an school trip in Canberra.
The Williamstown students were given the opportunity to understand how parliament operates by engaging in a mock debate on the topic of the banning of animals in circuses.
Students were assigned roles similar to those in the actual parliament, with a Prime Minister, a Speaker of the House and a Leader of the Opposition. Federal Member for Gellibrand, Nicola Roxon MP dropped in to visit the students and was impressed by what she saw.
“St Mary’s certainly seemed to be enjoying the debate, and I hope they’ve been able to gain some understanding of how parliament works and just what is involved in being a parliamentarian,” Ms Roxon said.
