IF you’ve ever wondered how the average punter would go against some of Australia’s best V8 race car drivers, now is the chance to find out.
Over the past few weeks, Steve Milner and his crew at Ace Karts in Sunshine have been timing and recording the efforts of all drivers on the track.
From their records a top 20 will be selected to compete in the Monster Energy V8 Time Trial Challenge on Thursday against the likes of V8 drivers Jamie Whincup, Shane Van Gisbergen, Lee Holdsworth and Craig Baird.
“It’s been great,” Milner said.
“There are some guys that have done four or five sessions out there and they are just going quicker and quicker all the time.
“At the end of the day how many people can say they have had the chance to race against the V8 guys and maybe even beat them.”
On the night there will be a number of knockout races before the top 10 will compete in the final.
Altona resident and Aussie Brut Utes Driver Hayley Swanson will also be competing.
Although karts are a stepping stone to competing in the V8s, Milner said a few of the high-profile drivers could have their work cut out for them against the local talent.
“We have had some really quick lap times that even I am struggling to do out there. It has been good in terms of the competition side of things.
“It gives them a chance to actually test their skills against these top V8 drivers.”
Milner encouraged racing fans to come along for the night, which will kick off from 6pm with the V8 drivers also available for a chat and autograph throughout the event.
