‘A ROOM without a book is like a body without a soul’ is a quote that Sue Martin and Wenche Osland live by.
The long time friends are co-owners of the Williamstown bookshop Book and Paper.
They saw their love for books and their unique backgrounds as the perfect synergy to open a bookstore.
The former high school English teacher and administration officer opened Book and Paper on Mothers Day 2009 and are now finalists in the 2010 Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Awards, in the new business category.
Sue said opening the bookshop was a big decision for the pair but after lots of research they felt their store would be a valuable contribution to Ferguson Street.
“Even though retail is difficult we were very hopeful that we could offer something that Williamstown and Hobsons Bay residents would appreciate,” Sue said.
Sue believes passion and a personal touch is what sets their bookshop apart from the rest.
“We are the owners but we’re also very passionate about our books and reading and we love to talk books to our customers and get feedback,” she said.
The shop facilitates two book clubs and often hosts author events including book signings.
Earlier this month former Bulldogs player Brad Johnson did a book signing to promote his newly released book.
“We’re also becoming well known for a destination for unusual and unique cards,” Sue said. “A lot of our cards are locally made – supporting local artists. But we also get some in from Europe.”
Sue said they were very excited to make the finals for the Business Awards.
“It’s a fantastic thing that allows us to showcase our business,” she said.
“It’s nice to have recognition of the commitment, passion and effort that we put into our business.”
The Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Awards gala dinner will be held on Friday 22 October at the Williamstown Town Hall to find out more go to www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or to find out more about Book and Paper visit www.bookandpaper.com.au
