Guy responds to hazard inquiry

By NICOLE VALICEK

LAST week, Star reported there will be no inquiry into the development around major hazard facilities after it was knocked back in State Parliament.
State Planning Minister Matthew Guy said this week in 2010 the Government endorsed the work of the Major Hazard Advisory Committee.
Mr Guy said the committee introduced detailed planning and development requirements including threshold distances in the Victoria Planning Provisions (VPP’s).
The VPP is a comprehensive set of standard planning provisions and provided a standard format for all Victorian planning schemes
“The government has also recently completed its review of the industrial zones to ensure appropriate standards are adhered to,” Mr Guy said.
The inquiry wanted to examine the appropriateness of approving new residential developments within close proximity to major hazard facilities.
Hobsons Bay is home to eight of the state’s 45 major hazard facilities which are all in close proximity to residential areas.
Hobsons Bay City Council strongly supported the inquiry and asked for an urgent risk assessment.
The motion was defeated 20 votes to 18.
