THE Spotswood RSL could close after Anzac Day this April.
Victorian RSL Chief Executive Officer Michael Annett confirmed the sub-branch is facing closure if circumstances don’t improve.
“It’s true, it’s having a serious think about whether it can carry on,” Mr Annett said.
“They’ve been struggling in terms of numbers for some time.
“It’s a story of a declining veteran demographic… and just whether they can keep going with an aging committee that has really done its best.
“But without new blood or without new members it’s very hard to keep going.”
Rumours have been circulating for more than three years as to whether the Spotswood-Kingsville RSL will remain open.
Despite this, members of the RSL are pushing forward with their usual Anzac Day commemorative plans but it may be their last hurrah.
Mr Annett said the few existing members of the RSL would have to consider moving to a more viable sub-branch such as Newport, Altona or Williamstown.
“When you’re a member of the RSL, and I’m particularly talking about people who have actually been in the armed forces – what we call service members (veterans)… you’re a member at the league at the state level … you have reciprocal rights at any other sub-branch in the state.”
Mr Annett said before the last State election the RSL was in discussions with Hobsons Bay City Council, the Western Bulldogs and the then State Government to look at redeveloping the site and adding a childcare facility.
“If there had been a redevelopment on the site there would have been the scope perhaps for some rejuvenation of the RSL clubrooms… as part and parcel of that project.
Mr Annett said despite the bleakness of the situation nothing is set in stone as yet.
“The state-branch is working with the guys at Spotswood to see whether they can keep going,” he said. “There’s always a chance.
