Blues out but not down

KEILOR may be out of finals contention in the Essendon District Football League’s Premier Division, but the Blues would have taken much pleasure out of their 11-point win over Maribyrnong Park on Sunday. In a game that had nothing more than pride on the line at Keilor Recreation Reserve, the Blues came out of the blocks on fire in the first half, shooting out to a 48-point lead by half time. The Lions then made small inroads on that buffer in the third stanza, but their deficit remained at 39 by the final change. The last quarter was a shootout with nine goals scored at either end, but with seven of them going Maribyrnong Park’s way, the Blues were given an almighty fright. However, the Blues managed to hold on, scoring win number six for the year. In other EDFL results, Taylors Lakes upset the Northern Saints and Keilor Park beat Roxburgh Park.

THE Melbourne Knights remain third in the Victorian Premier League after coming away with a 1-0 win over the Southern Stars at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Saturday. The Knights gained the lead through Marijan Cvitkovic in the seventh minute and managed to hold onto that buffer for the remainder of the 90 in a patchy display. In the Women’s Premier League, Altona City finally claimed its first point of the season with a scoreless draw at home to Sandringham on Sunday. City has struggled in the WPL this season, and prior to Sunday had lost all of its 16 encounters for the year, conceding 74 goals in total. Meanwhile, ninth-placed Cairnlea’s goal difference took a massive hit at home to runaway WPL leader South Melbourne on Sunday, going down in a whopping 16-0 defeat. The score was already 10-0 by half time before South Melbourne finished the job in the second half with five individual scorers.

GEELONG confirmed its position as favourite for the Victorian Football League premiership after beating Williamstown by 49 points on Sunday. In a battle between first and second on the ladder, it was the lower-ranked Seagulls who made the better start to the contest, kicking four straight goals in the opening term to take a seven-point lead into quarter time. However, the deficit served as a wake up call for the Cats, who began to attack. Geelong booted four goals-to-two in the second term to take the lead and then extended the margin with a five-goal third quarter. The damage could have been even worse for the Seagulls, with the Cats’ inaccurate kicking in front of the big sticks keeping Williamstown in the match. Reeling in a 20-point lead in the final term looked a tough assignment on paper, and it proved to be exactly that. Geelong dominated the last 30 minutes of the game, kicking eight majors to seal the 19.21 (135) to 13.8 (86) victory.

WERRIBEE has thrown itself into top four calculations with a 65-point thrashing of Port Melbourne. The Tigers recovered from a 13-point deficit at quarter time to dominate the remainder of the contest, kicking 16 goals in the final three quarters to seal the win.The Werribee forward line was at its brilliant best in the 20.16 (136) to 10.11 (71) win, with Majak Daw, Ben Warren and Addam Maric each kicking four goals. Around the ground, Ben Ross was a standout. Werribee now jumps to fifth spot on the VFL ladder, just one game behind fourth-placed Williamstown. In the final two rounds of the season, the Tigers will take on the Northern Blues and Collingwood.
