FOUR Hobsons Bay schools might have the key to the future of water smart sustainable cities.
The schools, which participated in the 2009 Melbourne Water Youth Conference in June, were awarded $500 each from Hobsons Bay City Council on Monday.
At the 2009 MWY conference there were 400 delegates representing more than 40 schools with students from Spotswood Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, Williamstown High School and Williamstown Primary School conducting presentations on how to create water smart cities.
Mayor Peter Hemphill donated $500 as part of his mayoral role to each school to encourage more water smart practises.
Students from Williamstown High School were awarded the best workshops on the day and they will attend the International River Health Youth Conference in October in Canberra.
They will receive a $5000 sponsorship from Melbourne Water.
Hobsons Bay City Council has recently adopted its Water Plan 2009 – 2014, which will aim to reduce water consumption over the next five years.
“Students who presented at the conference have taken a giant step towards reducing water use and together we are on our way to creating a healthier, more sustainable environment,” Cr Hemphill said.
