POLICE have condemned offenders who deliberately placed large rocks on roads, endangering drivers in Sunshine, Maribyrnong and Braybrook earlier today.
Police have said they believe the “boulders” are about the size of basketballs.
In the first incident a small hatch struck one of the rocks on Duke St near Burke St, ripping the undercarriage from the car at about 1.40am.
The car had to be towed from the scene and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade attended to clear oil from the road.
In the second incident a taxi has been hit by a rock thrown from a passing vehicle, on Ballarat Rd near Ashley St, at about 2am.
In the third offence, at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Duke St, a car hit a rock at about 2.45am, suffering damage to a tyre and alloy rim.
Sunshine Police Station Sergeant Darren Anderson said the three incidents could have caused serious harm.
“We are just so lucky no one has been injured overnight,” Sgt Anderson said.
“The potential for there to be a tragedy, because of the recklessness or just plain stupidity of those who may be doing this for kicks, is very real.
“We believe this is deliberate and are appealing for anyone with information to give us a ring.
“If your friends or mates are bragging about what they are doing, think twice and do the right thing, give us a call.”
Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
