Aunt inspires big cuppa effort

MAUREEN Bourke will brew up a storm when she hosts a biggest morning tea event to raise money for the cancer council later this month.
The Altona resident will host her first event this year from her shop Elle and Stuart on Pier St.
“We hope to gain lots of support and donations from our many loyal customers,” Ms Bourke said.
“Please come and join us for tea/coffee cakes and book in early for a complimentary relaxation massage on the day.”
Ms Bourke said she decided to host a morning tea because several family and friends have been affected by cancer, including her aunt.
“My aunty who I was very close to suggested I open the business, she was a driving force that kept hounding at me,” she said.
“She died a few days before the shop opened.”
Ms Bourke said the shop had become a general meeting place for people to come and chat.
She said the biggest morning tea was a great way to use the shop to network, raise money and awareness.
“It’s a nice way to give back.”
“Anybody is welcome … I hope everything falls into place and we can raise money out of it.”
The official date for the morning tea is 23 May, but Ms Bourke has urged Hobsons Bay residents to catch up over a cuppa anytime in May to raise funds for research, prevention and support services.
Since it began, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has raised more than $20 million for Cancer Council Victoria’s research, prevention and support services.
