A YOUNG boy has been praised by police officers for waking his hearing-impaired mother after a fire broke out in their Melton home on Friday morning.
Police officers pulled up outside the home after they noticed smoke coming from the Quail Crescent property at about 10.30am.
A woman, believed aged in her forties, was taken to The Alfred hospital for treatment to her burns.
The woman’s 12-year-old son helped his mother escape after waking her up as the home burned. He was uninjured by the fire.
On Friday, police were awaiting advice from fire investigators to determine if there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the blaze.
A CFA media release said the home was “well alight” when fire trucks arrived on the scene at around 10.20am.
The fire was brought under control at about 11.05am but the house was unfortunately “totally destroyed”.
Six trucks from Melton, Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat City and a Pentland Group Car attended the fire.
