IT IS a universal topic that many people living in today’s technologically driven world have experienced, but has gone undocumented until now.
‘It’s Lentils for you, Baby’ is the first book produced by emerging visual artist Kate Good that tells the ‘true’ story of a long distance viral relationship fostered via Facebook and text messages.
The 39-year-old Yarraville resident said her art projects are based on events that are happening in her life at the time.
It was the combination of going to her high school reunion and reconnecting with a former male student who lived in Sydney and a current arts project that propelled her to create the book.
“It intrigued me how communication affects relationships and the confusion that can reign from it,” Ms Good said.
“I ended up with a book that was a comment on that.”
The 380-page book documents her real life long distance relationship with ‘Nelson’ using Facebook messages, tweets and text messages.
Ms Good said the book explored the issues of modern day interactions and communication through technology.
“It’s a comment on how people relate these days which is so much in technology as opposed to being in the same room.”
Ms Good chose a “hot car roof” as the platform for the first public reading of the book in Spotswood last week.
“It’s like a performance piece. The relationship was the art work and I just catalogued it in terms of the technological dimension of the relationship.”
Ms Good wasn’t afraid to bare all in the book which includes embarrassing and at times “cringe worthy” passages she said many people can relate to and many that show the miscommunications as a result of technology.
“My story is everybody’s story, but sometimes it’s really helpful for people to see that.”
Ms Good said her “conceptual artwork” was still in the publishing process, but hoped to launch the book in March 2014.
