THE amount of new housing permits issued in the north-western suburbs has dropped by more than 1700 across 12 months, according to the Master Builders Association of Victoria.
Last week the association released figures which showed more than 6900 new housing permits were issued in the municipalities of Brimbank, Hume, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham in the 12 months to February this year.
In the previous 12 months more than 8620 permits were issued. In total, the value of work approved in the area was down from $3.1 billion to $2.7 billion.
The value of commercial permits approved was down from $378.7 million to $357.9 million, but it was not all the bad news for the industry.
The value of approved domestic extensions and alterations remained steady at $106 million and approved retail work permits went up from $186 million to $317.4 million.
But Master Builders executive director Brian Welch said the statistics “do not paint a positive picture of the building and construction industry in the area”.
He has encouraged builders to attend a free trade night being held in Taylors Lakes to receive industry updates, take the opportunity to ask questions and access products and services.
“It’s clear that local builders continue to face a tough economy and ever changing regulations,” Mr Welch said.
“This is why our trade nights provide such valuable insight into what is happening in the region and how to brace for the challenges ahead.
The event will be on Wednesday, 29 May from 5.30-9.30 pm. At the Taylors Lakes Hotel, 7 Melton Highway, Taylors Lakes.
