FOR Hillside youngster Catherine Spooner, calisthenics is a way of life.
The eight-year-old learnt her first trick when she was just three and hasn’t looked back.
Catherine’s hard work paid off recently when she was chosen to represent Victoria in calisthenics.
But for the Parkwood Green Primary School student what she enjoys most about training is making lasting friendships.
“I’ve been doing it for six years … so I have made a lot of friends. That’s the best part.”
Catherine, who attends Avonde Calisthenics College in Avondale Heights, told Star she also enjoys the many tricks she has mastered including walkovers and pike stands and loves wearing the colourful costumes, despite some being a tad uncomfortable.
And unlike many children her age, Catherine is always keen to perform in front of large audiences and show off her skills.
Proud mum Caroline said she was very excited for her daughter when she was chosen for the state team.
“It’s a great experience for her … she learns new skills and makes great friendships. There’s a bit of everything.” she said.
“It’s important to do something out of school, kids need an outlet.”
