THREE cyclists in Hobsons Bay are putting the call out for residents to donate to The Smith Family.
The trio who will be riding in this year’s Around the Bay in a Day said they were surprised when they learnt that none of their entry fee for the event is donated to partnering charity The Smith Family.
The entry fee goes directly to not-for-profit organisation Bicycle Victoria who put on the ride and The Smith Family generate funds through cyclists who choose to take on the fundraising challenge.
Richard, Graeme and Noel, who ride with Hobsons Bay Bicycle User Group, are encouraging cyclists in the event to either actively seek sponsorship or make donations to the charity.
Richard Jamonts said many people he’s spoken to were under the impression that part of their entry fee went to the charity so wouldn’t bother to seek sponsorship.
“The Smith Family do a lot of good work for displaced kids helping them with emergency relief and education,” he said.
“We want to raise money for them by promoting their website through posters and putting collection jars in cafes. “We’re not looking to make it onerous.”
Noel Dyson has actively worked in the community for several years.
He runs the Community Bike Shed in Hobsons Bay where he restores damaged bikes and donates them to community groups and schools as well as running cycling education classes and workshops.
The Bike Shed, which is located in Noel’s garage, relies on the community who make donations to take part in his workshops.
“People can come here and learn how to look after their bikes or do a workshop with me,” Noel said. For more information about the charity go to www.thesmithfamily.com.au.
