Fine food pays the piper

A FOOD for fines program run by Hobsons Bay City Council libraries last year collected more than 1900 items for charity.

Hobsons Bay Mayor Angela Altair said the 2012 total eclipsed the previous year’s amount by almost 200 items.

“A huge thankyou goes to our local community who embraced the holiday spirit by contributing to this unique program,” said Cr Altair.

“Food for Fines has been running for the past four years and allows library members to pay their overdue charges with non-perishable foods, which are then packaged into hampers and delivered to local families in need.”

The council has waived a total of $25,000 in library fines since the program began and collected almost 7000 items of food.  The Food for Fines program will run again in late 2013.
