A NEW home would be the perfect start to 2013 for Tinkerbell the cat.

The friendly feline had it tough last year but is now recovering in a foster home and is looking for a family to love her.

Tinkerbell was handed in to the Western Suburbs Animal Rescue Service earlier this month in a sickening condition. Her former owners, from St Albans, had failed to treat an eye infection, leaving the cat, heavily pregnant at the time, in terrible pain. The eye eventually eroded and left a gaping hole in her head.

Nathan Miles, president of the animal service, said he was appalled at Tinkerbell’s condition when she was handed over.

“She would have been in a lot of pain,” Mr Miles said.

“Nothing surprises me anymore … I don’t understand how they (the owners) could look at their cat every day and not do anything to help.

“There are a thousand things they could have done.”

Mr Miles said the miraculous moggie had her wound stitched and had been de-sexed and vaccinated.

“She’s still so friendly, having gone through all of that.”

The animal activist said unfortunately society continued to treat cats differently to other pets, in particular dogs, and education was needed to gain a shift in this kind of culture.

“If you can’t afford to have a cat, then don’t have one. There’s no excuse to not register or de-sex your animal. There are cost effective ways of doing it.

“There’s a chunk of the community that acts responsibly and a chunk that don’t …there’s not an answer to why people do what they do.”
