Recycling in the swim

MELTON swimmers now have a place to recycle their waste when they visit Melton Waves.

Thirteen dual waste and recycling bins have been installed at the swim centre thanks to a joint initiative between Melton City Council and Keep Australia Beautiful.

Nine bins have been installed inside the centre, with a further four bins installed outside.

The council estimates that up to 1400 litres of recyclables will be diverted from landfill each day as a result of the new bins.

Melton City Council mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council was committed to reducing the amount of recyclable waste that ended up in landfill.

“The Melton community already has a strong recycling ethos, regularly disposing of their glass, paper and plastics in a responsible way when they are at home,” Cr Majdlik said.

“The new bins will allow them to continue to recycle while they are enjoying the facilities at Melton Waves.”

The council was successful in receiving a Keep Australia Beautiful Beverage Container Recycling Grant which has gone towards the project. The Keep Australia Beautiful community grants program, funded by Coca-Cola, is now in its third year and has seen a major injection of additional funds to help local communities implement initiatives to increase beverage container recycling.
