Celebration of flight

ALL are invited to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the second powered flight in the Altona Bay area made by J. J. Hammond on a Bristol biplane in February 1911.
The celebration will be held at Altona Library on Wednesday 23 February.
February 1911 was a busy month for New Zealander J. J. Hammond who accompanied two Bristol Box Kites to Australia, and made his first Victorian flight at Altona Bay on 18 February for 31 minutes, soaring to a height of 3,000 feet.
In the same month, he also made the first cross-country flight and the first powered passenger flight – all in and around Altona Bay.
