Say cheese for speed cameras

The State Government has begun publishing the locations of mobile cameras across the state, in accordance with its election promise. It has pledged to publish the list on the Department of Justice website weekly.
In the first week of the initiative, a total of 18 cameras were revealed in Brimbank, including six in St Albans, two in Keilor Downs and two in Sunshine.
In St Albans, cameras were placed on Arthur St, East Esplanade, Furlong Rd, Main Rd West, Novara Parade and St Albans Rd.
In Keilor Downs drivers speeding down Copernicus or Lady Nelson Way should expect to cop a fine, while Sunshine’s Duke St and St Albans Rd were also targeted. The website also revealed cameras in Keilor, Keilor Park, Deer Park, Sunshine North, Sydenham and Taylors Lakes.
The cameras are usually placed in unmarked cars at hoon and accident black spots. The Coalition and police hope the initiative will encourage drivers to slow down.
Acting Inspector Ross Burbidge, who is in charge of road policing in the north-western region, including Brimbank, said he hoped the strategy would stop speeding.
“I’m not sure people are going to be able to retain all that information in their heads, but hopefully if they know we are out there in the community trying to stop speeding, stop trauma and save people’s lives, that will have some impact,” he said.
“If it slows people down, we’ve half achieved our aim, because even if we have collisions it’ll be at a lower speed and have less impact.”
