Bike

Former St Albans resident Bill Smith had his only means of transport taken from outside his room at the Melton Willows Aged Care Accommodation last month, after the back door of the facility was left slightly ajar by a fellow resident.
Mr Smith, who was born with an intellectual disability, was forced to move into the home after it became apparent he could not properly care for himself; however he has remained as independent as possible mainly due to the mobility his bike has offered him.
And he loved nothing better than going for a ride in the park.
Melton Willows carer Tammy Weekes-Kovacevic said Mr Smith was one of the few residents who could pay his own bills and do his own shopping; however he now relied on others to do this for him because he is unable to get around on foot.
Making matters even worse, the bike was recently revamped as a Christmas present.
“He didn’t come out of his room for two days,” Mrs Weekes-Kovacevic said.
“His confidence is pretty low right now.
“Bill will never be able to fund a new one. We’re looking at around $2000. He can’t afford that.”
Mr Smith said he walked aimlessly around the premises when he noticed his bike was not outside his room, until staff members noticed broken bike parts in the backyard, leading them to believe the thief had thrown the bike over the fence.
“The most important things in my life are my dog and my bike,” the dejected 51-year-old said.
“I felt so hurt and so sad.”
Mrs Weekes-Kovacevic said she contacted Melton Police but were informed that because the premises were not secured, the theft could not be considered a break and entry.
