CALLOUS thieves have left a Keilor Downs resident living in fear after they broke into her housing commission home earlier this month.
“Michelle” was home alone when the burglars struck last Monday week, stealing her laptop, iPhone, TV, digital camera and DVD player, and leaving the single mother alarmed and shaken.
The mother-of-two only realised she had been robbed around midday when she noticed shards of glass on her laundry floor and a broken security door handle.
To make matters worse, “Michelle”, who suffers from an anxiety disorder and lives on a disability pension, was not insured for those items and cannot afford to replace them.
“I can’t sleep since it happened,” she said.
“I’ve had five to seven hours sleep since Sunday. I’ve been sitting up all night, worrying it will happen again.
“I’m a nervous wreck.”
This latest robbery comes in the wake of revelations that Brimbank recorded a massive 60 per cent spike in residential burglaries last week.
“Michelle” who has no family in the area said she now feels defenceless and is waiting for repairs to her door to be made. Until then the 35-year-old will not be allowed to have her children on weekends.
“I don’t know when I’ll see my children next. They’re the only two precious things in the world to me.
“Every time I walk through the house I have to walk past their room.”
“Michelle” claims she was advised by police to install a camera at her front door to allay her fears, but said she could not afford it.
She said after speaking to the Department of Housing earlier in the week and asking for an urgent transfer she was told she would be waiting “years”.
“I want to leave the house. I don’t want to be here anymore.”
