FOOTSCRAY Edgewater’s first XI side ended its Victoria Premier season with a 72-run loss to Melbourne University on Saturday.
The Bulldogs finished the rain-interrupted season in 12th spot with six wins and eight losses.
Footscray Edgewater looked like it might reach Melbourne University’s total of 236 after a 66-run opening partnership between Dean Russ and Greg Sheehan. But those hopes were ended by consecutive ducks to Dylan Kight, Travis Dean and Tallan Wright, followed soon after by a duck to Brad Green.
Captain Travis Gloury made 20 while Shane Jones chipped in with 17.
Hamish Winter-Irving started spectacularly with the ball, dismissing Melbourne University’s first three batsmen for a combined total of 12, but Scott Sanders single-handedly saved the innings with 103, before Dean, who took three wickets for the match, claimed his wicket.
Kight finished the home-and-away season as Footscray Edgewater’s top run-scorer with 616 runs, the 11th overall, while Andrew McCammond was the side’s highest wicket taker with 21 scalps – 36th overall.
While the season is over for the firsts, Footscray Edgewater’s second XI will be contesting the finals series, having secured a home qualifying final against Dandenong despite losing to Melbourne University on Saturday.
Melbourne University chased down the Bulldogs’ total of 130 with five wickets to spare.
Lucas Dredge took two wickets for Footscray Edgewater, which finished the home-and-away season in fourth place.
Meanwhile, wicketkeeper batsman Kight, who scored three centuries for Footscray Edgewater’s first XI side this season, is competing for Victoria’s second XI side in a four-day match against NSW which began yesterday.
