BRIMBANK City Council has proposed the sale of vacant land in Keilor Park and is seeking community feedback.
The 0.13 hectare reserve which is located at 2 Zagreb Court, Keilor Park, is under consideration to be sold for development, after a rezoning process.
Chair of Brimbank Administrators John Watson said Brimbank City Council had a number of nearby parks and reserves in the area, and had made the decision that the community needs were amply met and the plot of land was surplus.
“Given the quality and proximity of existing parks in the neighbourhood, the sale of the Zagreb Court (plot) will allow council to use the proceeds of the sale toward continuing to improve and enhance community infrastructure in Brimbank,” Mr Watson said.
Brimbank Council said there were other open spaces that could be used, and were already being enjoyed, by residents including the upgraded Collinson/Eliza St Neighbourhood Park; the upgraded Thea Court Reserve Suburban Park, and Keilor Park Recreation Reserve.
Mr Watson said the site had been vacant since the area was subdivided in 1988 and was not earmarked for future works as part of council’s ‘Creating Better Parks Policy’ which is guiding the ongoing revitalisation of open space in the municipality.
The land, which falls within a Residential 1 Zone, is designated as a ‘reserve for municipal purposes’ and council intends to remove the ‘reserve’ status of the land before it is sold.
The proposal is currently open for public comment and submissions can be submitted to council.
“Council cannot and will not sell any land without a full public process of consultation,” Mr Watson said.
Letters were sent to nearby residents, advising them of the proposal last week.
Residents have already expressed their concern to Star, stating they want to “save [their]park”.
Submissions can be made by 16 May 2014 via mail Brimbank City Council CEO Bill Jaboor, Brimbank City Council, PO Box 70, Sunshine, Vic 3020 or emailed to info@brimbank.vic.gov.au
There will be an opportunity to have written submissions heard before a Committee of Council at 6pm Monday 26 May 2014 at Keilor municipal offices.
