Hobsons Bay City Council has supported a permit application made to the Department of Planning and Community Development to demolish the existing Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club building.
The demolition will make way for a two-storey clubhouse at 260 Nelson Place, Williamstown.
Councillors supported the proposal provided it allows for public access to and along the foreshore.
Councillor Angela Altair said the current clubhouse has one of the most beautiful locations around the bay but is pretty old now.
“It’s increasingly inadequate, what’s being proposed to replace it is definitely going to be an improvement and I don’t see any reason why the council shouldn’t support the demolition of that clubhouse,” she said.
“It doesn’t have any particular historic merit.”
Cr Altair said she believed the plans lodged by Simon Greenwood Architects would enhance the area.”
