A GROUP of dedicated Keilor Downs Secondary College students will become ambassadors for Sunshine Hospital in a bid to promote the importance of volunteering to the community.
The initiative will be launched this Thursday at Club Italia as part of National Volunteer Week, and it is hoped the students will spread the word on the benefits of volunteering and the new and improved facilities on offer at the Hospital.
Sunshine Hospital manager of volunteers Jo Spence said the program stemmed from voluntary work the teenagers had been participating in since last year.
Ms Spence said both hospital and school staff realised the calibre and commitment of students involved in the program, and their willingness to help the hospital and its patients in any way.
She said the students would help the hospital target diverse communities and would even have a role to play in fundraising.
The group is already in the process of raising funds for rocking chairs in the special care nursery.
“It will give students an understanding of how big organisations operate,” Ms Spence said.
“They will be ambassadors in a much less formal way and take back the information they have received to their peers.”
Ms Spence said the hospital had received an overwhelming response from students who had heard the call, with over 50 volunteering their time out of school hours.
