WERRIBEE has moved to fifth on the VFL ladder after taking care of Frankston on Sunday.
The Tigers outscored the Dolphins by 12 goals to six after quarter time to collect a 33-point win at Frankston Oval.
The Dolphins came out firing in the first quarter and by quarter time had an 11-point buffer over Werribee.
Tigers coach Scott West denied Werribee started slowly, instead crediting Frankston with playing good footy in the first quarter.
“They played really well early and put us under pressure so take nothing away from them,” West said.
“We were alright, but they were just a lot better than us and we’ll take the win any day of the week.”
The Tigers were quick to get the lead in the second quarter, scoring three goals to Frankston’s one.
However inaccurate goal-kicking restricted their halftime lead to four points.
Werribee’s momentum continued after the main break as they kicked clear to extend their advantage to 24 points by three-quarter time.
From there the Tigers were able to keep Frankston at arm’s length and secure its third win in four games.
West credited Werribee’s quarter time turnaround with his side’s ability to clean up its mistakes and establish momentum with the ball.
“We were wasteful early and we didn’t take our opportunities so you have to do that, and our skills were really messy and fumbly and it was due to the pressure of Frankston, so we just had to clean our game up,” he said.
“In the second quarter we did that and got a little bit of flow in our game.”
When asked who his best players were, Scott said many players came “in and out of the game all day”.
“We had a lot of contributors in different parts of the game so that’s obviously pleasing,” West said.
“(Lachlan) Hansen started really well, he clunked everything early and he was quite consistent over the day.
“(Cameron) Pedersen was good, Benny Ross was terrific again I thought, Sam Gibson was good and Leigh Harding was good off half back.”
Levi Greenwood was Werribee’s only injury concern after copping a knock in the third quarter, but he later returned and played out the game.
“He’ll be a bit sick and sore for himself tomorrow but apart from that they were pretty good,” West said.
