Residents’ fight reaches terminal

MOTORISTS may face long waiting times at level crossings after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) backed the State Government’s plans for an inland port and transport terminal in Altona.
Residents’ association Hobsons Bay Community First (HBCF) challenged the proposal at VCAT last month.
It argued that the long freight trains running through the level crossings at Champions Rd, Maddox Rd, Kororoit Creek Rd and Maidstone St would increase traffic congestion, and the rumbling and vibration from the trains would also affect residents living near the railway line.
“We did all we could to forward the community’s concerns with VCAT. I regret our hard work isn’t reflected in the outcome,” HBCF co-convenor Tony Briffa said.
