ON the eve of the premier bowls season, the Sunshine Western Regions Sports Club received a first-hand account of what it takes to make it on the greens. Speaking at the Don Deeble Rising Star Award presentation, Lee Schraner wowed the crowd with his rise from talented junior to Australian representative and champion. The former number one ranked bowler in the country also overcame battles with addiction, anxiety and depression to reach the top of his sport. Schraner is now an ambassador for the beyondblue foundation and helps people throughout the country. Also on the night, September’s Don Deeble Rising Star Morgan Mitchell was presented with a cheque for $1000 from the SWRSC and the Yarraville Club Cricket Club after a brilliant 12 months on the athletics track. Mitchell has her sights set on making next year’s Commonwealth Games.
