COMMUNITY organisation Gateway is recruiting new volunteers to fill urgent gaps in a number of roles within a range of programs.
Gateway co-ordinator of volunteers Fatima Milhem said the organisation was looking for people who would be interested in working with older people in various roles.
These include volunteer fishing enthusiasts on Mondays from 8.30am to 4pm, food link transport on Mondays and Wednesdays 10am to 1pm and light exercise instruction on Wednesday from noon to 4pm.
Gateway Social Support Options is located at South Kingsville Community Centre, Spotswood.
“If you can assist with a profile with Gateway and the above urgent volunteer roles it would ensure our programs run efficiently and clients would get the best care whilst on the programs,” Ms Milhem said.
“Volunteering is an essential community contribution as a citizen… if you have the time why not help to make a difference.”
She said the fishing enthusiast would need to feel confident driving a mini-bus attached to a trailer load of equipment.
An interest in fishing and empathy and understanding for the frail and aged would be a bonus.
The food link program involves collecting food from food bank in Yarraville and distributing it to organisations in Hobsons Bay that register on Gateway’s needs list.
“If these roles are not filled the challenge is for our existing volunteers to fill gaps which mean working longer hours, multiple times a week.”
Every Thursday the Gateway Hydro Program is run by a volunteer who takes participants through light exercises at the Ascot Vale Leisure Centre.
Ms Milhem said the volunteer will need to conduct these exercises in or out of water and ideally have a background in physiotherapy or exercise instruction.
Other roles include bus jockey, who will assist the driver to collect the clients and a kitchen support to assist the chef with meals and morning/afternoon tea that are available on Wednesday.
Ms Milhem said Gateway is very flexible and can provide guidance and training.
