Job losses at Toyota

The Toyota plant at Altona

By NICOLE VALICEK

TOYOTA Australia has today announced it will make up to 100 voluntary redundancies at its Altona manufacturing plant.
According to the company, the decision is in response to a drop in export orders, making it unsustainable to keep the manufacturing workforce at its current size.
The number of cars built each day has reduced from 470 to 431 vehicles.
According to the company, the exact number of voluntary redundancies will be determined based on the number of applications received and the skill-set of those employees.
There will be no compulsory redundancies.
President and CEO Max Yasuda said it was a difficult decision to make, but it was vital if the company
wants to move towards global competiveness.
