POLICE are once again pleading with motorists to adhere to new speed limits on the Melton Highway between Melton and Hillside.
Melton’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said motorists have expressed concerns regarding the reduced speed limits in that area as a result of substantial roadworks.
“This has resulted in many drivers becoming impatient and as a result tail-gating to try to force other drivers to speed up, and also overtaking in inappropriate areas and circumstances,” Leading Sen Const Edwards said.
He told Star that Melton Highway Patrol conducted a meeting with representatives from VicRoads in relation to the change in speed limits and the ongoing roadworks.
Police were informed the works, particularly in the vicinity of the bridge over Kororoit Creek, will continue for some time, and at times will result in substantial delays and disruptions to traffic flow, while the change to speed limits will be permanent.
“This area has been the site of a number of serious injury collisions and fatalities in recent years,” Leading Sen Const Edwards said.
“While these have not always been speed related, it is envisioned that the lower speed limits will result in less severe injuries if a collision does occur.”
Part of the road works in the area will include a painted median strip 1.5 metres wide between opposing lanes, which is hoped to reduce head-on and side-swipe collisions. Several years ago a driver lost his right arm when the side of his vehicle collided with the tray of an oncoming truck.
Leading Sen Const Edwards warned drivers that extra police resources have been allocated to the area and officers will be enforcing speed limits at all times.
He said anyone observed overtaking on double lines, painted median strips or in a manner that puts other motorists or road workers at risk, will be prosecuted.
“People have to get used to it because we’re stuck with it … and we will be enforcing it.”
