MORE than 6000 cannabis plants with a street value of more than $19 million were seized by police during a major drug operation in Melbourne’s North-West.
Drug Task Force detectives raided 46 homes during Operation Taxa, arresting 19 people in suburbs including Deer Park, Brookfield, Tarneit, Sunshine North, Caroline Springs and Avondale Heights.
Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said the aim of the operation was to dismantle grow houses and crack down on organised crime syndicates involved in the production of cannabis.
“This successful operation has sent a clear message to those taking part in this illegal activity – police are taking it seriously and will continue to target cannabis grow houses throughout the state,” Mr Fontana said.
“This operation was all about pro-active policing by disrupting and dismantling grow houses.
“There seems to be this acceptance in the community with regard to cannabis use and this must change,” he said.
A number of people have been charged with drug offences including cultivating and trafficking a large commercial quantity of cannabis.
The operation is ongoing.
