Six cars in six days

A SHOCKING week on Melton’s roads has seen six cars impounded in six days as recidivist offenders continue to put other motorists’ lives at risk.
Six vehicles were impounded in the first week of October with one driver reaching speeds of 187km/h in a 70km zone, while others did 15 metre long burnouts in residential areas.
Melton Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said it was a particularly busy week, but unfortunately not out of the ordinary.
Leading Sen Const Edwards said the same drivers continued to flout the law and had extensive traffic infringement history.
“There’s just a lot of people out there that it doesn’t matter what legislation is in place, they don’t care what the consequences are,” he said.
“We don’t know if anything will modify their behaviour.
“Other than jail time, what other consequences are there?”
In the latest surge of lock ups a 24-year-old probationary driver from Caroline Springs had his Ford sedan impounded after he was detected driving at 101km/h in a 50km zone on Hume Drive.
While another male from Melton West had his Commodore sedan impounded after he was found driving at 128km/h on the Melton Highway in Plumpton. Both men were charged on summons.
Leading Sen Const Edwards said a Melton male was involved in a police pursuit when he was clocked doing 77km over the speed limit on the Western Highway, Rockbank.
Leading Sen Const Edwards said as police attempted to intercept, the male accelerated and tried to evade police.
He was then checked at speeds of 187km/h in a 70km zone, 177km/h in a 60km zone and 149km/h in a 50km zone along busy High St.
The driver was eventually forced to stop after damaging his vehicle on a roundabout and was arrested and taken to the Melton Police Station where he was interviewed. His vehicle was impounded and he will be facing numerous charges.
Vehicles are impounded for 30 days and in some cases police may apply to the courts to seek a further period of impoundment due to circumstances like prior convictions or speeds in excess of 70km over the speed limit.
