RAISING children is no easy task and no one understands that more than a group of dedicated workers from ParentsLink.
That’s why the group, in conjunction with MacKillop Family Services, is offering parents across Brimbank and Melton Shire a program to help them deal with the daily issues affecting their three to eight year olds.
And with the school holidays in full swing, many parents could not think of a better time than now to learn how to deal with temper tantrums and emotional outbursts.
ParentsLink co-ordinator Judy Cain said the Tuning into Kids sessions was designed to teach parents the importance of connecting emotionally with their children and realising the significance of a youngster’s emotional development.
Ms Cain said it was imperative that children are able to express their feelings in words and this will often lead to a happier household.
“It’s very important for children to regulate their emotions and develop their own sense of empathy,” Ms
Cain said.
“They will then be able to empathise with others and make friends a lot easier.”
Ms Cain said it was important that parents help their child understand why they can’t have or do something as this may often help to avoid an emotional outburst – often at a shopping centre or other public places.
She said the program also offered somewhat of a support group for parents, who often felt alone and believed their children were the only ones behaving badly.
“The program helps parents gain confidence and improve and strengthen their relationship with their children.”
A Tuning into Kids session will be held this Thursday evening from 6.30 to 7.30pm at Sunshine Library. Bookings are essential. 9249 4640
