A MELTON City councillor is calling on the State Government to increase bus shelters across the municipality.
At last week’s council meeting Cr Lara Carli moved a notice without motion calling on the council to advocate for more bus shelters at bus stops.
Cr Carli told Star out of the 413 bus stops in the municipality, only 127 had shelter.
“It’s not good enough,” Cr Carli said.
“It’s sad seeing people sitting on the ground, so close to the road … it’s an accident waiting to happen.”
The Watts ward councillor said she often saw school children with bags over their heads during winter in an attempt to ward off the rain. She said the elderly and residents with a disability were often caught in the heat or rain.
Cr Carli said she would call on the council to write a letter to Public Transport Victoria requesting an increased allocation of shelters.
Meanwhile at the same meeting Cr Nola Dunn moved a notice of motion advocating the relocation of a bus stop located on the Western Highway, Rockbank.
Cr Dunn said the bus stop was in a precarious position and posed a safety hazard for commuters.
“It’s terrible that people have to cross a national freeway to catch a bus,” Cr Dunn said.
If the bus stop was relocated, the current 456 bus route would be required to change.
