NEIGHBOURHOOD houses across the City of Melton will be opening their doors for morning teas and special activities next month.
Neighbourhood House Week will be celebrated from 6-12 May and mayor Kathy Majdlik said the week would provide an opportunity to showcase the low-cost and quality programs on offer at the houses.
“Neighbourhood houses are open to all ages, backgrounds and abilities and offer a broad range of free or low cost arts, educational and recreational programs and activities,” Cr Majdlik said.
“They also offer social, recreational and educational opportunities for communities in a supportive and welcoming environment.”
A number of activities will be taking place to commemorate the week including an antique appraisal day, personal safety workshops, art and photographic displays, morning teas and healthy cooking demonstrations.
The Hillside Community Centre cubbyhouse project will also be unveiled.
The cubbyhouse received a makeover last week thanks to the creative work of local children who decorated the house in the Neighbourhood House colours of blue, orange and white and each designed a plaque to be affixed to the cubby.
Cr Majdlik said activities such as this reflected the core values of Neighbourhood Houses.
“Neighbourhood houses provide residents with opportunities for meeting new people, as well as gaining information about community programs within their local community.”
