BRADLEY Fellowes has got bricklaying down to a fine art.
When he began work as an apprentice three years ago, the Sunshine resident knew nothing about the trade.
Now, his efforts are beginning to be noticed by industry leaders.
Mr Fellowes was named as Apprentice of the Year in the Bricklaying category of the Master Builders Association of Victoria’s State Apprentice of the Year Awards this month.
The 23-year-old said he was thrilled to be recognised, after being nominated by his boss and trade school teacher.
“It’s pretty unbelievable,” he said.
“I take my work seriously and the fact that other people are noticing that I’m trying my best is really rewarding.”
The hard-working tradesman said he fell in love with bricklaying from the very first day of his apprenticeship.
“I just love it, every day is a challenge,” he said.
“Bricklaying is not just a job, it’s really an art form.
“I can go anywhere in the world and acknowledge good brickwork, whether it’s a house or a bluestone church.
“And I would never have been able to do that if it hadn’t been for this job.”
Mr Fellowes acknowledged that he had made sacrifices to join the trade.
“It does take up a lot of my time.
“Throughout my apprenticeship I didn’t really go out drinking or partying.
“But that’s a sacrifice I was willing to make.
“I’d rather be successful than go out for a big weekend every weekend.”
