DESPITE living in Australia for more than 10 years, former Louisiana resident Dovey Dee will be holding her first solo exhibition since her arrival in Australia.
Dovey, who has lived in Altona for 10 years, said her paintings were inspired by a trip she took to the Northern Territory after she got back from her sister’s interment ceremony in the United States.
“I went to the Northern Territory to centre myself,” she said.
“I got a suite of really lovely paintings with incredible bursts of colour – they were like a segue into a memorial for my sister.
“This is my first solo exhibition – I think it’s delightful that its happening in my home suburb.”
Dovey said she was excited about the exhibition but noted the difference between art access in Australia when compared with the US.
“To get into a commercial gallery is a very different process,” she said.
“I never had to pay for a gallery until I moved here but The Louis Joel Centre is a lovely centre,” she said.
The artist said she would be happy to see the paintings sell, even though they helped her through grieving for her sister.
“There’s a couple of them I really like – these pieces of work were a real surprise for me.”
“I didn’t know I had them in me, but I’m happy to turn them loose on the world.”
Dovey’s exhibition ‘Out of the Landscape’ began over the weekend and will run until 29 May.
