Safety a priority

KEILOR MP Natalie Hutchins will hold a public meeting in a bid to improve safety along Calder Park Drive.
Ms Hutchins told Star she had decided to take action after being continually approached by residents concerned by safety, noise and congestion along Calder Park Drive and the Calder Freeway interchange.
The notorious black spot has been the scene of numerous accidents in recent years.
In January, Star reported that police were campaigning for safety barriers to be installed along Calder Park Drive to protect residents from hoons following a spate of crashes.
The move came after a car crashed through the back fence of a home along the road, landing in a back garden.
Ms Hutchins said the road was one of the top two black spots complained about by residents approaching her office, with the corner of Kings and Taylors Rds also in drivers’ bad books.
Ms Hutchins said residents reported that truck drivers in the area often cut corners with safety, ploughing through the middle of roundabouts, while traffic levels disturbed people’s peace.
“One resident told me he couldn’t sell his property because of the noise levels,” Ms Hutchins said.
“People’s back fences back onto the road and when they hear the noise, they’re put off.
“That area has earned a bit of a reputation for problems with safety and noise.”
The Keilor MP said she had raised the matter with Brimbank Council and VicRoads but was yet to see any action taken.
She said she decided to hold the forum to give residents the opportunity to vent their concerns in the hopes of finding a solution.
A second forum is planned to discuss safety at the Kings/Taylors Rd intersection.
The meeting will be held this Saturday at 2pm at Ms Hutchins’ office in Sydenham.
