HOBSONS Bay’s Young Citizen of the Year, Chelsea Hatherall, has been selected to take part in this year’s New York Arts and Cultural Management Tour.
The Newport resident is one of only 12 Australians selected to take part in the tour.
Chelsea said she put her name down but never thought she would be selected.
“I thought it was probably out of reach … but I got a phone call the next week,” she said.
“I was completely shocked and thrilled.
“I’ve been madly trying to fundraise so I can get there.”
Despite only going for one week, the prestigious tour has a heavily packed agenda, filled with many things Chelsea has waited a long time to see.
The young artist, who is also the marketing and communications coordinator at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, said she hopes she’ll be able to meet the curator or the Guggenheim.
Through the tour, Chelsea will have the opportunity to not only meet other young artists from all over the world but some of the most influential and successful people in the New York art scene including, Donna Williams from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Schwannah Wright from the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
“I want to just pick their brain,” she said.
“New York has such an epic arts culture scene.”
Chelsea is holding a fundraising movie night at the Sun Theatre on Thursday 9 August where the film The Sapphires will show.
