THE Altona Basketball Club is going pink for a good cause. On Sunday 22 of July the Lady Gators will play in pink jerseys for their match against Warrnambool as part of the club’s Annual Pink Event, which aims to raise money for breast cancer research.
Last year the club raised $1500 and women’s team assistant coach Elisha Hogan said the Gators would be out to break that mark.
“This will be our third year doing the pink game. It was always something that the club was very interested in,” she said.
“Some other clubs around Big V participate as well so it was something Altona certainly wanted to jump on. We organised the pink uniforms and then got in contact with the Breast Cancer Foundation. “We get merchandise sent out, we’ve had guest speakers come out and gradually throughout the years we have tried to build it up and make it bigger and bigger.”
The club’s Youth League girls’ side will also play a huge part in the process with the Gators raffling off prizes donated from local businesses as well as selling pens, shoelaces and ribbons from the Breast Cancer Foundation.
“The feedback has been really good. Last year I think we made over $1500 and this year we will be trying to increase that,” Hogan said.
“For example our game is against Warrnambool and we have a bit of a rivalry with Warrnambool through finals and that sort of thing. We have got in contact with them and got their girls on board as well.
“We have sent them some merchandise and things like that so they will be selling that as well.” Hogan and the Altona Basketball Club would like to encourage as many people as possible to support the great cause.
“Breast cancer is something that everyone has been affected by in some way and our main focus is to try and raise as much money as possible,” Hogan said.
“If anyone wants to make a donation they can get in contact with the Altona Gators Basketball Club or the Breast Cancer Foundation.”
